GSA's hidden talents
GSA is a hub of eclectic employees and, as such, we decided to share some of the hidden talents that lurk within our organisation! In this article we learn about Helen Li's extreme measures to get the perfect shot, Sheena's baking creations and Luke Yates' ability to tear up the stage.
HELEN LI - Financial controller and avid photographer.
Helen has been with GSA for over 10 years and is GSA’s Financial controller. Helen currently holds the record for the largest negative leave balance in the company due to her love for travel. Helen’s main passion is in numbers and, having found deep satisfaction in balancing balance sheets, Helen has not ‘worked’ a day in her life.
Outside of GSA, Helen is also an avid traveller and photographer, which combines her two other passions; indeed, her travel photos have become widely recognised in the travel community. Her commitment to perfection in photography has been praised by her fans as she often goes to extreme measures for the perfect shot. Helen has submerged herself in a lake in minus 10 degree weather, hiked through a snow storm and even put her marriage on the line, all in the name of photography.
Helen’s talents also extend into calligraphy, ceramic pottery, indoor gardening, and watercolour painting – her design works usually takes years to produce as she frequently switches between her hobbies making each piece extremely rare and never finished.
Her edgy approach to gardening speaks about the importance of developing resilience and making sacrifices. She will often let her plants go uncared for weeks and then bring them back to life at the brink of death. Equally, Helen has no hesitation ending months of work on a mint plant just to make a mojito!
SHEENA TRUONG - Full time broker, part time baker.
Sheena has been with GSA for just under 2 years now, in that time she has really sweetened the lives of other employees with her infectious smile and amusing charm.
Being the quiet over achiever she is – being a sweetheart in people’s eyes was just not enough for her. She secretly wanted to extend her talents to people’s blood sugar too and so her cake making endeavours began! She was always talented in this department, amongst other things, such as being a great addition to the Professional Risks team by day, and a domestic goddess by night. She even manages to get a workout in most days – like seriously? Is she even real?
Sheena creates beautiful cakes that are a representation of the people receiving it – thankfully, people only ever order pretty cakes for people they like.
You can see all her creations on her Instagram at The Sugarette.
LUKE YATES – part bass player, part carnivore: all legend.
By GSA standards, Luke is a fairly recent acquisition – having been here for a mere baby and a half (14 months).
Having recently bought a house with a yard, Luke can frequently be found setting fire to things and using the resulting exothermic reaction to cook large pieces of meat. This never fails to grab the attention of Luke’s ever present labrador, Zella – who is the best dog in the world, yes she is. Rumours, started by Luke himself, are that his skills in bbq’ing are on the incline, but his willingness to share the spoils requires work.
In a time not long past, Luke could be found (attempting to) tear up stages with his math-metal band, or playing Sunday afternoon funk to relaxed punters. Occasionally, he will approach a stand-up open mic night with misplaced confidence. Luke cannot effectively use Glad-Wrap and that is okay by him.
A keen lover of film and literature, Luke enjoys walks along the beach and men who aren’t afraid to cry.
